Smash burger FAQ: your questions answered
Here are the most common questions about smash burgers and about ordering from DesiSmash in Leicester and Glenfield, answered in plain English. If your question is not here, message us on WhatsApp.
About smash burgers
What is a smash burger?
A smash burger is made by pressing a ball of mince flat onto a very hot griddle so it cooks into a thin patty with a crisp, lacy, browned crust. Read the full guide: what is a smash burger?
How is a smash burger different from a regular burger?
A regular burger is formed into a thick patty before cooking, so it is taller and softer inside. A smash burger is pressed thin on a hot surface, so it has more crust and a savoury, roasted flavour. See smash burger vs thick burger.
Are smash burgers cooked all the way through?
Yes. A thin patty cooks through in a couple of minutes, and mince should always be cooked until piping hot with no pink inside.
Why are smash burgers usually double or triple stacked?
One thin patty is small, so stacking gives you more crust and melted cheese in every layer. See double or triple smash burger.

About DesiSmash
What is the difference between Original and Desi?
Original is a classic American-style smash, seasoned with salt and pepper on the griddle. Desi patties are mixed with chilli, coriander, ginger-garlic and house-roasted spices. Both come in beef or chicken at the same price. More in Desi spiced smash burger explained.
Which burger should I order first?
If you are new, try The OG Smash with a Beef Original patty. If you like spice, try the Tikka Butter Melt with a Desi patty. See which smash burger to order first.
How hot are the spicy burgers?
Most burgers have no chilli heat. The Garlic Chilli Crisp is medium and the Naga Firecracker is our hottest. See our heat guide.
Do you have a vegetarian burger?
Yes, the Paneer Tikka Melt. It is vegetarian but not vegan, and it is cooked on the same griddle as the meat burgers, so tell us if you need it kept separate. See vegetarian smash burger.

Allergies and dietary needs

All our burgers contain gluten, milk and egg. Sesame and mustard are in the buns and sauces. Our naga mayo, aioli and chutney mayo contain egg, and the paneer burger contains milk. We cook on shared equipment, so we cannot guarantee any item is free from an allergen. Tell us about any allergy when you order, and ask for the full allergen information.

Cooking at home
Can I make smash burgers at home?
Yes. You need a very hot, heavy pan, fresh 80/20 mince and a stiff spatula. See our step-by-step home method, and download Chef Hass's free Desi Smash recipe from the home page.
